In their book titled “In His Image,” Dr. Paul Brand and Philip Yancey describe how pain affects the church body as well as the human body. A catalyst that triggers healing responses in our bodies, pain also summons believers to act as healing agents within our churches.
“Real love protects and defends areas of special vulnerability. We may be called on to bolster bruised egos, gently confront an insensitive person, or take upon ourselves some of the minor stresses that have accumulated. As a former missionary, I cannot overstate the life-sustaining role of people back home who invested themselves in me by praying and writing letters. These specially sensitive cells sought out my pain and nourished me in time of need. Such dedicated people make the difference between a missionary who serves twenty years and one who breaks down after a short time.”
